What was shaping up to be yet another dominant performance for Josef Newgarden at Gateway turned into a terrifying moment on Lap 131 of the 2025 race, as a high-speed crash with rookie Louis Foster sent Newgarden’s car flying upside down, skimming the pitwall and showering sparks across the oval.
The accident occurred shortly after Newgarden had taken the lead from Scott McLaughlin, looking poised for his fifth win in six starts at this circuit. But fate had other plans. Foster, running impressively in the top 15 and the fastest among the Rahal Letterman Lanigan entries, got caught out by the notorious marbles on the high line in Turn 4. After brushing the wall, his car suddenly darted across the track toward the pit road. A suspected broken toe-link meant he had no control—right as Newgarden had committed to the low line.
What followed was a violent, head-on collision at high speed. Newgarden’s car launched up and flipped, its aeroscreen grinding along the asphalt while the rear wing struck the pitwall. The car eventually came to rest further down pit road, upside down but largely intact thanks to modern IndyCar safety innovations.
Miraculously, both Newgarden and Foster walked away unaided. The incident, though terrifying, served as a powerful testament to the strength of the Dallara chassis and the aeroscreen, which continues to prove its worth in extreme impacts.
This crash was only one part of a disastrous day for Team Penske. Will Power had already retired earlier after a dramatic tyre failure sent him into the wall, and Scott McLaughlin later exited the race with a mechanical failure—suspected to be suspension-related. All three Penske cars, incredibly, failed to finish.
David Malukas, meanwhile, led more laps in this race than in his entire IndyCar career to date, further shaking up what was already a wild race.
What was supposed to be another chapter in Newgarden’s Gateway dominance turned instead into one of the most dramatic moments of the 2025 IndyCar season. The crash will no doubt be a major talking point for weeks to come, but above all, fans and teams alike will be relieved that both drivers walked away safe.
